Rat infestation has gotten worse in recent years, with Yuen Long, Sham Shui Po, and the East District hit worst. A council member said that there are over 200 rats, as large as cats, at the Chai Wan wet market — more than the number of vendors there.
Critics say that the Food & Hygiene Department is not doing enough to eradicate the rat population. A Yuen Long council member said that the increase in the rat population is due to illegal food dumping by restaurants. Despite repeated complaints, the FHD has not done anything about it. The cat-sized rats commonly seen at the wet market might be caused by FHD’s use of cheap, ineffective rat bait.
Ewwww!
