Li Ka-shing, the richest man in Asia, told media on Tuesday after attending a meeting of the Federation of Hong Kong Chiu Chow Community Organizations that constitutional reform in Hong Kong must move forward and not remain at a standstill.
Li said that there are many different opinions, demands, and fears that should not stop Hong Kong from achieving constitutional development and progress, reports the Standard.
In a later press release, Li said: “Progress toward democracy is the foundation with which to fortify the rule of law. A spirit of tolerance attuning our differences showcases the strength and capacity of our shared civil society.
“Should we fail to nail the perfect synthesis between ideals and practicalities, we must still move forward together as a bundle of antinomies.”
“Every effort for democracy will not be a vain struggle, as progress will arc toward broadening participation and with each and every conscientious vote, Hong Kong citizens will be participating in building it so.”
Well, with an estimated net worth of USD35.1 billion (or HKD 272 billion) it shouldn’t be too difficult for you to put at least some of your money where your mouth is, Mr. Li. We invite you to do so.
