Purple Christmas? Hong Kong warned as colourful pollution shrouds China

Hong Kong may choke amid a cloud of pollution over Christmas, according to Ming Pao Daily (as translated by EJI).

Photos of Nianjing’s purple sky have been clogging up the interwebz this week, after the city suffered a concentration of dangerous PM2.5 particles on Wednesday following two unprecedented “red alert” pollution warnings in Beijing.

According to meteorologists, the purple tint was a result of the twilight glow penetrating the smog. Sounds pretty!

While Hong Kong is fairly unlikely to see such a bizarre phenomenon anytime soon (sorry to disappoint), the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) has apparently issued a warning, saying that air pollution in Hong Kong could hit high levels this afternoon.

No prizes for guessing who’s to blame, of course. Smog from Beijing continues to head southward.

Guangdong has already been hit with heavy smog, with several cities, including Guangzhou and Foshan, raising the “yellow alert” – the second-highest air pollution warning.

So don’t just presume it’s your beer goggles if everything goes super hazy this Christmas Eve then Coconauts…
