Five seconds of viral video have Hong Kong animal lovers on the rampage this week – and understandably so.

The video, filmed at a ParknShop supermarket in Tuen Mun district and posted to Facebook on Sunday morning, shows a man flinging (or dropping if you’re more generous), then kicking a dog that has wandered onto the premises.

In the video, the man can be seen seemingly tossing the dog to the floor then taking a wild kick at it, losing his balance in the process. The terrified mutt then runs off.

The original Facebook post, which has since been removed, explained that the dog had strayed into the store and employees were trying to lead it back outside when the man decided to take matters into his own hands.

“The crazy man (in the video) shouted loudly at the staff: ‘How come there is a dog here? Throw it out,’” the poster wrote.

The staff then tried to explain to the man that all they could do was to stop the dog from wandering around and wait for its owner to come back, but he was having none of it.

“The man said ‘let me do it,’ and then he put down his purchase”, the post continued, before going on to describe the man’s actions as “inhuman.”

They weren’t alone in their assessment.

One representative commenter decried him for picking on “an innocent defensiveness animal,” while another argued “Why can’t you call the police? These people need to be put in jail for years.”

They might, in fact, get at least some of the judicial retribution they’re hoping for.

Hong Kong’s Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has reported the case to police, and the Tuen Mun district investigation team is looking into it, according to local outlet HK01.

A spokeswoman from the supermarket chain, meanwhile, told HK01 that the staff had been trying to maneuver the dog into a corner near the entrance when the man suddenly rushed the animal.

She said no animals were allowed in their stores except guide dogs.

“We have reminded the staff that if animals wander into the stores, they should stay calm and should not hurt or touch the animals. With the safety of customers taken into consideration, they should wait for the manager on duty to handle it.”
