Pro-democracy lawmaker compares Occupy Central to civil rights movement at ‘Selma’ premiere

Hong Kong’s pro-democracy leaders were out in a show of force last night at the Hong Kong premiere of “Selma”, the Oscar-winning movie about Martin Luther King Jr. and his fight for civil rights in 1960s America.

Buoyed by the recent shout-out from singer Common as he and John Legend accepted the Academy Award for their song “Glory” from the film’s score, leading figures from the pro-democracy camp dusted off the yellow umbrellas and hit the red carpet.

As lawmaker Lee Cheuk-yan explained: “When you look at the scene [in Selma] where the blacks go through tear gas, it’s very much like Hong Kong.”

He added: “I would say the spirit of Martin Luther King very much needs to be alive now in the world and in Hong Kong.”
