Post-grad student jumps to death on first day of new school year in Hong Kong

A 21-year-old post-graduate student committed suicide by jumping from his family’s 14th floor flat of the first day of the new academic year.

The young man, surnamed Chan, completed a bachelor’s degree in computer science and engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) last year and was about to start a one-year diploma in education at the same university.

However, his body was found at the foot of a tower block in Tsz Ching Estate at 5am on Monday morning, Ming Pao reports.

Chan, who is described as being introvert and spending most of his time playing computer games, wrote letters beforehand to his family, secondary school classmates and university peers.

Joseph Sung, vice chancellor of CUHK, urged students to deal with difficulties with courage, adding that teachers are always available to help.

If you are experiencing depression or suicidal thoughts, please call the Samaritans’ 24-hour hotline on (+852) 2896-0000 for help.
