A 21-year-old university student from Poland drowned at a Sai Kung beach in the early hours of yesterday as she was taking a swim with friends.
Magdalena Puczka, an intern at PolyU, was seen struggling in the waters of Ham Tin Wan by two of her friends at around 1:50am yesterday, The Standard reports.
They pulled her out of the water and called emergency services, who airlifted her to Pamela Youde Nethersole Hospital. She was declared dead shortly afterwards, at around 3am.
Puczka, who was attending PolyU’s department of applied physics as part of a summer internship, had visited the beach as part of an overnight camping trip organised by her fellow interns.
Initial investigations by the police have suggested no suspicious circumstances.
“We do not rule out that the girl consumed alcohol before [she drowned],” a police source told the SCMP.
A spokesperson for PolyU told The Standard that counselling would be offered to students affected by Puczka’s tragic death, and that the university was in the process of contacting her family to provide assistance.
