Police in Hong Kong are investigating dozens of marine officers for fishing while on duty, according to local media reports.

The reports, which were quoting sources, noted that the officers involved were all based out of the Ma Liu Shui Marine Police Base in Sha Tin in the New Territories.

Preliminary investigations showed that from February of this year until recently, a number of officers at the base have been turning off surveillance cameras at the site after nightfall and going fishing when they should have been on duty, according to a Sing Tao Daily report.

It added that investigators will take statements from each of them and look at their telephone communication records.

HK01 noted that the officers were fishing on a barge operation platform.

The Chinese-language news portal added that around three marine officers were caught fishing when a supervisor visited a barge and that there were around 40 to 50 officers being investigated.
