Police raided the Central office of a “law firm” yesterday after no record of it or its “partners” was found by the Law Society of Hong Kong.
Lam, Fung & Lee Solicitors was reported to the police last week after a woman allegedly lost a HKD881,000 bank loan to them, SCMP reports.
The fraudulent firm was recommended to the victim through a middleman who was helping her take out the loan. The bank agreed, and the funds were reportedly transferred to the self-proclaimed lawyers.
The swindling solicitors’ office in Asia Standard Tower was later found to be closed by the victim, who called the police, according to Apple Daily.
The Law Society confirmed that none of the three partners – Lam Ka-leung, Niki Fung, and William Lee – their eight associates, or even the firm itself were registered with the society, despite its website claiming the firm was established for over 20 years.
Lam, Fung & Lee’s website also listed three other offices in Tuen Mun, Kwai Chung, and Sha Tin, none of which are valid addresses. In addition, the firm’s own Chinese name was written incorrectly on the website.
Police seized documents from the Central office on Monday after obtaining a court warrant. In case Lam, Fung, or Lee is reading this: we should explain that that’s legal procedure.
According to security staff at Asia Standard Tower, the firm had only leased out the office space last month.
No arrests have been made so far. Police sources told reporters at the scene that they are searching for the partners, and believe that there are more victims.
