Police are investigating the deaths of a woman and her son whose decomposed bodies were found yesterday in their flat in Tuen Mun.
Officers arrived at the scene in King On House at Shan King Estate at about 2:30pm, responding to reports of a strong odor coming from a flat on the 13th floor, where they found a woman and a boy who had been dead for an estimated three to four weeks, SCMP reports.
The pair was later identified as Yik Shun-mui, 48, and her 15-year-old son Leung Man-lai.
After eight hours of investigation inside the foul-smelling apartment, Tim Wong, acting chief inspector of the Tuen Mun district crime squad, told local media that police had found no sign of a struggle inside the flat, no visible wounds, and no suicide note.
While Chinese-language newspaper Ming Pao reported that initial police investigations showed no record of illness, domestic violence, or social security allowance applications for either Yik or her son, online outlet HK01 said sources had told them that Yik suffered from mental illness.
An autopsy will be carried out to determine the cause of their deaths, though Wong said it’s too early to tell whether their deaths were suspicious.
It was reported that Yik had two sons. She began living with the younger after divorce, while her elder son lives with her estranged husband.
Police said an identity card of a 22-year-old man, believed to be Yik’s older son, was found at the scene, according to Commercial Radio. A background check would be conducted and police said they would contact the pair’s family.
