Watch out! The police are out to get drivers who park illegally with increasing vigilance — 40 percent more fixed penalty tickets were issued last year than 2009, or one million tickets. There are also fears that police may double the fixed-penalty fine from HK$320 to HK$640 because of the increase in illegal parking — ouch!
Authorities said that the lack of parking spaces and the demolition of car parks is the main reason for the increase in illegal parking tickets, rather than a stricter crackdown. However, Hong Kong Automobile Association representative maintained that the increase in tickets is due to a step up in the enforcement of the law, as officers usually turn a blind eye to illegal parking when it does not obstruct traffic.
Having a car in Hong Kong is increasingly a rich man’s game, with exorbitant tunnel fees, gas prices, unaffordable parking garages — and now this!
