A police officer had possibly the worst day at work yesterday when he was dragged behind a moving taxi for 10 metres after attempting to arrest a cab driver for overcharging.
The officer and a colleague were posing as tourists and took a cab to Hong Kong International Airport at around 5pm yesterday. When they arrived, the 44-year-old driver, surnamed Chan, reportedly charged the undercover cops HKD397 for a HKD203 cab ride.
After disembarking, the passengers revealed that they were in fact officers of the law. One of the policemen unloaded their suitcases while the other went to arrest the driver. The cabbie, who we guess is a “go big or go home” kind of guy, then allegedly closed the door on the officer’s hand and sped away, Apple Daily reports.
The police officer was dragged behind the taxi for roughly 10 metres before his hand came free from the door. Chan got 18 kilometres away before he was arrested on Kap Shui Mun Bridge on suspicion of “furious driving” (yes, that’s a real thing) and overcharging.
The injured officer was taken to hospital for scrapes to his hands and feet. An investigation by the Kwai Tsing District police is underway.
