Recommended by the world’s most prominent guide to cuisine, Yuet Lai Shun restaurant and its traditional Cantonese dishes do pretty good business something a thief, unfortunately, took advantage of this week.
While we might never know if the burglar spotted the Yau Ma Tei eatery in the Micheline Guide’s cheap eats pages, he certainly reaped the benefits of the Dundas Street restaurant’s popularity, stealing a computer and some HK$20,000 (US$2,550) from the cash draw in the early hours of yesterday morning,
According to Ming Pao, the suspect is still on the run, and police say they’re looking for a man aged between 30 to 40-years-old, about 1.75 meters-tall, and of medium build. At the time of the theft he was wearing a blue short-sleeved shirt, jeans, and flip flops.
Officers say the suspect was sitting outside the restaurant at about 4am that day smoking a cigarette before prising the glass door open.
CCTV footage published online shows the suspect somewhat awkwardly climbing over the counter, forcing the cash register open with a meat cleaver, and then taking money out.
According to the restaurant’s owner, a 45-year-old man surnamed Yu, the suspect also stole a computer underneath the cashier counter.
It’s possible that the thief thought that the computer was connected to the CCTV camera. It was not, with the device merely connected to the register.
A security guard from a building nearby sounded the alarm at about 5am that day after noticing the restaurant door was open.
Yuet Lai Shun, which serves traditional Cantonese style dishes, was featured in the most recent “Bib Gourmand Selection”, an award handed out for quality three-course set menus for HK$400 (about US$51) or under.
