Police find explosives at abandoned ATV studio in Sai Kung

Police found a range of explosive devices, which they believe were to be used in anticipation of the upcoming LegCo electoral bill vote this week, at an abandoned ATV studio in Sai Kung late last night, reports TVB News.

Some of the explosives were detonated by a bomb disposal team this morning. Police arrested five men and four women in relation to the case, confiscating an MP5 assault rifle, a weighing scale and other chemicals from the studio.

The Organised Crime and Triad Bureau received a tip last night and searched the studio for suspicious items. After finding explosive devices, firefighters arrived at the scene, and the studio was locked down for police investigation.

Officers believe the weapons were to be used in an attack related to LegCo’s vote on the government’s political reform package this Wednesday. The package, which proposes the pre-screening of candidates in chief executive elections from 2017 to beyond, has been widely opposed by many political groups.

Thousands of ralliers marched on Sunday to protest against the package, which they call “fake” universal suffrage. More demonstrations are scheduled for this week, including rallies organised by the Civil Human Rights Front, Scholarism, and other democracy campaigns.

The abandoned studio where the explosives were found used to be a studio for ATV. Since it was vacated in the 2000s, its walls have been adorned by graffiti artwork, attracting local photographers and, until very recently, bomb makers.

Police believe that more suspects related to the case are on the run. If you have any relevant information, please contact the Organised Crime and Triad Bureau at (+852) 2527-7887.
