Police called after cat and kittens found suffocated in bag outside Hong Kong rescue centre

Hong Kong police are investigating after a cat and two kittens died after being abandoned in a tightly sealed nylon bag outside a rescue centre in To Kwa Wan last week.

The adult cat and two of her kittens died of apparent suffocation, while another two kittens were barely breathing when found inside a large dog food bag and three other smaller bags outside the Cat Society last Wednesday morning.

The Cat Society wrote on its Facebook page: “There was no air and it was suffocatingly hot inside the bags. The three cats died in pain with twisted limbs, their mouths wide open. Apparently they were trying to breathe. Their body temperature was very hot. They were still soaked in sweat.”

The Cat Society, a volunteer group that provides shelter for stray and unwanted cats, does not have full time staff. They urged the public to only drop off cats when volunteers are present.

CCTV footage from outside the rescue centre has been handed to police.

Anyone found guilty of abandoning animals in Hong Kong can face a fine of HKD10,000 and six months in jail.
