Hong Kong police have arrested a 52-year-old man in connection with the death of his girlfriend, who lived with him in Ma On Shan.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, the chief inspector of Shatin District, See Kwong-hung, said police received a call at 6:30am from a Chinese man who said he had killed his cohabiting girlfriend at his home along Mui Tsz Lam Road.
See said officers arrived at the scene in the New Territories village at 6:40am, and found a naked woman lying there, as well as the 52-year-old.
Paramedics arrived at the home 10 minutes later to revive her but to no avail. She was pronounced dead at the scene, the inspector added.
Police arrested the man on suspicion of murder.
See also said that they found some cannabis and crystal meth at the scene.
Initial investigations showed the pair had some monetary disputes.
“The arrested person might have taken drugs, resulting in a dispute with the deceased and him attacking her,” said the inspector.
See said the woman died in the early hours of Thursday.
Police are waiting for the forensic medical examiner to determine the cause of death but See said the woman had suffered extensive wounds.
Officers have not yet found the murder weapon, See added.
An investigation is underway.
Murder is rare in Hong Kong. The city recorded 23 homicide cases in 2021, with most involving domestic or family violence, while two were triad-related.
