A British kindergarten teacher, reportedly the holder of a black belt in some type of martial arts, appears likely to miss class today, after allegedly punching and throwing sandbags at police officers as they attempted to arrest him yesterday on suspicion of drug trafficking.
The 36-year-old man, referred to only as “James” in local news reports, is expected to appear later today at Tuen Mun Magistrates’ Court, where he will face two counts of assaulting a police officer and one charge of trafficking in a dangerous drug.
The suspect, who teaches English at a kindergarten in Fanling and lives in Tai Po with his wife and child, was detained in Tin Shui Wai at about 2am on Monday after a scuffle with two cops from the Yuen Long special duties squad, reported Apple Daily.
The policemen, aged 38 and 27, approached James, a Hong Kong ID card holder, as he left a hotel on Tin Yan Road which, according to a tip received by police, was an establishment known for drug trafficking and consumption.
A holder of a “black belt” in a martial art form not clarified exactly by Apple Daily, James did not go quietly.
As the officers closed in, he retaliated with punches and by throwing sandbags at the pair, until he was eventually subdued, on.cc reported — without explaining exactly where the suspect managed to find the bags of sand.
The confrontation left both officers with injuries to their abdomens and knees, for which they were sent to hospital.
Police, meanwhile, seized about 30 grams of marijuana worth about HK$9,000 (US$1,150) from the suspect and four pieces of 1X1 centimeter LSD blotter paper bearing pictures of Mickey Mouse.
Certainly a good thing those didn’t go anywhere near a kindergarten.
