Plans for Hong Kong’s power to come from the mainland

The Hong Kong government is looking at getting nearly half of Hong Kong’s electricity from the mainland in the future.

Currently about 20 percent of Hong Kong’s power comes from Daya Bay nuclear plant. The city expects to need to source 30 percent more from the mainland in near future.

Two options are currently being considered: source more from the mainland or generate more electricity locally with natural gas. Both options are similarly cost and Environment Secretary claims the former option will not further affect the air quality in the region.
