Hong Kong athletes plan to deadlift 1 million kilos in 24 hours for charity

Do you even lift bro? These 24 men and women most certainly do, and on March 19 they will be performing a copious, body-shattering amount of iron-pumping: these swolemates will be attempting to deadlift 1 million kilos (yes, with six zeros) in a span of 24 hours for charity, in an event organised by Pinnacle Performance, a Wan Chai strength and conditioning facility.

The money raised will go to the Pinnacle Foundation, an organisation founded by the gym that encourages Hong Kong’s underprivileged children to gain confidence and value fitness by providing activities, coaching and teaching in a safe sports environment. The foundation is still seeking sponsors for the event, so please get in touch

On the day of the mind-boggling challenge, the team members will rotate around three oaded barbells and complete sets of 10 reps – starting at 9am on Saturday, through the night, and ending at 9am on Sunday. This means each athlete would need to lift 45,000 kilos, averaging 600 reps in total and 750 kilos every minute. Yup, these guys just took your New Year’s gym resolution and tore it into a million shreds.

No such feat has ever been attempted in Asia before, according to the organisers of the “The Pinnacle Million”, as the event has been dubbed. Unsurprisingly, the lifters face the possibillities of fatigue (to put it gently) and burnout on the day of the event, thus requiring the brave musclemen and musclewomen to follow an intensive, four-month training regime, involving gym sessions four times a week. (Talk about #gains!)
