Is it a baby or isn’t it? The truth is, we have no idea, but since when has that ever stopped netizens from unleashing a tsunami of righteous, unbridled internet rage?

The “baby” in question, subject of a photo posted and re-posted around Hong Kong social media circles for three days now — long enough to attract the attention of multiple local media outlets — is ostensibly in the arms of a woman enjoying a cigarette. Only there’s no baby visible, just a blanket covering what could be a baby carrier.

Thankfully, Facebook user Pui Yee was there on Wednesday to piece it all together for us, uploading five pictures to the page of “Support Group for HK Employers with FDHs”, or foreign domestic helpers. In the post, Pui Yee said the two women pictured — presumed to be domestic helpers — were “chatting happily” near New Town Plaza in Sha Tin district, one of them smoking with the “baby” in her arms.

You think it’ll work by just putting a piece of cloth on top of the baby? Idiot!” Pui Yee said in the post, followed by several “angry” emoticons, hinting the blanket would not be able to block the ostensible little one from the harmful cigarette fumes.

The post was quickly shared among parents as well as employer groups. Many netizens said her act was unacceptable, and could pose a danger to the infant as she was holding the burning cigarette close to the presumed baby’s unseen head. Some others even urged her employer to terminate the helper.

“Don’t hire a helper to take care of your child unless it’s absolutely necessary,” one commenter responded.

At this point we’d like to again point out what we don’t know.

1) Whether or not there is a baby in the photo.

2) Who the child — if it exists — belongs to.

2) The occupations of the women in the photo.

Trust us, we want to be as outraged as everyone else, but we’re at least gonna need to know the answer to question no. 1 before we can fully enjoy the fun.
