Pearly Shites! Hong Kong Customs investigating Colgate Total cancer claims

Think you’re being good by brushing your teeth every morning and night, just like Mum said?

That might not be the case if you’re using Colgate Total, apparently.

Hong Kong’s Customs Department is investigating the safety of the popular brand of toothpaste following a Bloomberg News report that was released last year.

The article commented on how the chemical triclosan, found in the toothpaste, has been linked to disrupted development and cancer cell growth in animals.

The 1997 approval of Colgate Total by the US Food and Drug Administration is now being questioned by certain scientists, prompting Hong Kong Customs to investigate such claims and “seek professional advice from the Department of Health”.

According to a quote received by everyone’s favourite customs-focussed news outlet Customs Today, Colgate-Palmolive’s Hong Kong office said the report “unfairly questions the US FDA’s safety review of Colgate Total” and that “Colgate Total users can be fully confident in the safety of our toothpaste”.

There you go. Use with complete, if not Total, confidence.
