If you’re thinking of visiting the Peak at some point over the next few months, don’t count on being able to hop aboard the Peak Tram.

Starting tomorrow, the tram, which takes daytrippers from Admiralty up to the Peak, will be closed for two to three months as the tram’s operator carries out a HK$684 million (US$87 million) revamp, Ming Pao reports.

The Peak Tram has been in operation for 130 years, and carries more than six million passengers annually.

News of the revamp was announced earlier this month, and improvements will include bigger tram cars that will nearly double passenger capacity from 120 to 210 passengers, refurbished lower and upper termini with more space for passengers waiting in line, and a new haulage system and track rails.

The Peak Tramways Company has said that the upcoming suspension of services will be the first of two, though they have not confirmed when the second suspension will take place.

In the meantime, for those of you still looking to soak up the Peak’s unparalleled views, there are alternatives.

If you don’t mind waiting for the bus, you can catch the No. X15 New World First Bus (NWFB) from the Admiralty (West) bus terminus, the No. 15 NWFB from Central Ferry Piers or Exchange Square, or the No. 15B NWFB from the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre Extension in Wan Chai (on Sundays and public holidays only). The Hong Kong Island green minibus Route No. 1 also travels to the Peak from Central.

If you’re more the private transport type, taxis can also easily take you to the top of the Peak for a pretty reasonable rate.

Finally, the Peak is also accessible via your own two feet. There are a number of routes to the top, with the hike usually taking an hour to an hour and a half depending on which you choose.
