A mentally ill patient at Eastern Hospital stabbed a wooden chopstick inside his left nostril so hard that it injured the frontal lobe of his right brain, causing a haemorrhage and meningitis from bacterial infection. Miraculously, he survived after a course of antibiotics.
Apparently, the patient suddenly stabbed a chopstick inside his nose without any provocation and pulled it out before notifying the nurse. He did not appear injured outwardly. The brain injury was not obvious until a MRI was done. The medical team said that since the brain does not have nerve cells, the patient cannot feel the injury to his brain, and that it was a miracle that he survived. This is Hong Kong’s first case of a wooden chopstick penetrating someone’s brain; we hope that it’s the last too!
