A taxi driver claims that passengers smashed his vehicle’s rear window out of spite after he insisted that that they wear seatbelts.
The 43-year-old taxi driver, surnamed Lam, picked up five passengers in Sham Shui Po shortly after midnight on Wednesday, reports Apple Daily.
The passenger in the front seat refused to fasten his seatbelt (as is required by law), but finally gave in reluctantly after the driver said he wouldn’t start the car until he did.
“It’s not you who would be fined, it’d be me!” the driver claims he told the passenger.
The four passengers sitting in the back got off first at Saigon Street in Jordan, with the front-seat passenger disembarking later at Shanghai Street.
He gave the driver HKD40 for the HKD38 fare and told him to keep the change.
After the passenger got out of the taxi, the driver was getting ready to drive off when he heard a loud bang.
He looked back and saw that the four passengers who got out earlier had smashed his rear window with a metal stool.

The men then ran off. The driver called the police, who were unable to find the culprits. No arrests have been made.
“I was asking them to wear seatbelts for their own safety, anyway!” the driver, in disbelief, told Apple Daily.
