Passenger allegedly beats up taxi driver, 71, for expensive cab ride

A man allegedly beat up a 71-year-old taxi driver because he found his cab ride too expensive in the early hours of yesterday.

The cabbie, surnamed Chan, picked up a passenger in Sai Wan Ho at around 2am yesterday, Apple Daily reports. He drove the man to a building on A Kung Ngam Road in Chai Wan, but the pair got into a dispute when the passenger reportedly complained his fare was too high and left.

Chan tried to chase him down for payment, but the passenger reportedly punched the elderly driver, pushed him onto the ground, and beat him up.

A witness told Apple Daily that she saw a man in a dark shirt (the passenger) kicking and punching a man in a white shirt (Chan), who was lying on the ground.

She added that the man in the dark top also dragged Chan by his ankles but ran away when the cabbie fought back. Chan called the police and was taken to hospital with head and neck injuries.

Police officers from the Eastern District Criminal Investigation Team are searching for his assailant, who was described as a man in his 30s or 40s, of medium build, who was wearing a black T-shirt. No arrests have been made so far.
