Children who were born before 2011 and are reaching the age of five need to get booster shots of the pneumococcal vaccine, according to the Hong Kong Medical Association’s task force, as reported by the RTHK.
Apparently, a booster shot is necessary because the vaccine given to children pre-2011 is not effective against more virulent pneumococcus strains. In fact, a three-year-old toddler, with the previous vaccine, died of pneumonia on Monday.
