Assistants to pro-democracy activist Jimmy Sham found a suspicious package containing a syringe and a blade outside his office Tuesday.

The box, which had the words “danger” and “be careful” written on it, was dropped outside Sham’s office in Sha Tin at around 4:30am by a man wearing a sleeveless black top and a baseball cap, according to CCTV footage sent to Apple Daily.

The package also had two used masks and some paper towels inside.

Sham is the convener of Civil Human Rights Front (CHRF), the group that organized marches that drew millions to the streets, according to official counts, to oppose a controversial extradition bill last year. CHRF also holds the annual July 1 pro-democracy protests which have taken place every year after the 1997 handover, with the exception of this year due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

It’s not the first time the activist has been targeted—last year, he was assaulted twice in August and October. During the second attack, a group of hammer-wielding men clobbered Sham when he was en route to a CHRF meeting, leaving him lying on the street as he bled from his head and his arms.

Sham is also a district councillor in Sha Tin, and also campaigned for the 2020 Legislative Council elections before they were postponed. During an unofficial primary for the elections, Sham received the highest number of votes for candidates in the Kowloon West constituency.

According to Apple Daily, Raphael Wong, who is the chairman of Sham’s political party League of Social Democrats, said Sham and Figo Chan—Vice-Convener of CHRF—have both been followed by unknown individuals in recent days.

The incident is currently under police investigation.
