Panic Stations: Suspected Hong Kong Ebola case is another false alarm

Ebola panic took over Hong Kong again this weekend after a man arriving in the city from Nigeria was quarantined with symptoms of vomiting and diarrhoea. The 32-year-old has however tested negative for the deadly disease, according to a government statement issued yesterday.

Last week another suspected case – this time of a woman returning to Hong Kong after a holiday in Kenya – was also found to be a false alarm. The territory is taking no chances, however, and has promised to quarantine all travellers from Ebola-stricken areas who show symptoms upon arrival.

The highly infectious disease, which at present has no cure, has claimed around 1,000 lives in west Africa so far this year. While there have been no confirmed cases in Hong Kong yet, the outbreak is already sparking worry within this densely populated city, which suffered around 300 deaths as a result of SARs 11 years ago.
