Own goal prompts match fixing allegations

Well, match fixing may not be an unusual thing in Asian professional football, but with Hong Kong setting up a fully professional Premier League next year, the territory’s FA cannot afford a scandal on its hands.

However a match between Yokohama FC Hong Kong and Tuen Mun Hong Kong in the First Division on Wednesday has raised significant questions about potential match fixing.

The two teams were tied near the end of the match, but a player from the Tuen Mun team “accidentally” scored an own goal with a header (watch the video here), allowing Yokohama FC Hong Kong to win the match – their first victory this season.

The incident has disappointed many Tuen Mun fans, and supporters and players have expressed their anger through social media, calling it a “shame”.

There has been serious speculation about whether the match was fixed and the Hong Kong Football Association has said it will initiate an in-depth investigation soon.
