Yesterday more than 100 Indonesians held a prayer vigil in Victoria Park for the two victims of the murder case that has shocked Hong Kong.
Like the two women who were found dead in banker Rurik Jutting’s apartment, Sumarti Ningsih, 25, and another woman yet unnamed in Hong Kong courts, many of those in attendance were domestic workers.
Ningsih’s cousin Jumiati (who goes by only one name, as do many Indonesians), who helped to identify the body, was there. She said the last time she saw her cousin was back in their home village, reports the AP.
“She was good and she was nice to her family,” Jumiati continued. “She tried to work, work and work to give her son a better life.”
Susiata, a friend of Ningsih’s, said, “I have lost my best friend, and I am devastated”.
Many in the crowd held signs demanding changes to domestic worker laws in both Hong Kong and Indonesians, according to Salon.
Amnesty International says roughly half of Hong Kong’s domestic workers come from Indonesia.
Jutting was charged with murder and didn’t enter a plea. He will reappear in court today. There have been allegations that at least one of the murdered women was working as a prostitute.
