Out of pocket: Sophisticated Mong Kok bus thief ‘caught on tape’ cutting into victim’s trousers

A 66-year-old man found himself the victim of a strange theft on Tuesday when a perpetrator reportedly cut into his trouser pocket on a bus in Mong Kok and stole HKD3,500 in cash.

Footage of the alleged theft, which took place on the upper deck of a KMB 66X bus driving through Mong Kok en route to Tuen Mun, was caught on tape by a suspicious fellow passenger.

The video shows a man, alleged to be the thief, sitting next to the victim. He is seen to have his hand behind his back, purportedly cutting into the pocket of his fellow rider.

The victim was prompted to chase after the thief by the filming passenger after the deed had already been done, reports Oriental Daily. Clearly the guy filming sees himself as a reporter, and therefore is ethically bound not to intervene.

Kept in his back pocket, the victim’s wallet remained in place, although HKD3,500 inside had mysteriously vanished.

The thief, said to have been covered by two accomplices on the bus, managed to escape from the vehicle after pressing the emergency exit button – a tut-worthy crime in itself.

Footage, which shows the alleged thief’s face, is making its way round social media.

The puzzling incident is the latest of six similar cases to have been reported across Hong Kong over the last three weeks, according to the paper.

Police are now investigating the case.
