Oh, sad! Street acts in Mong Kok to end

Remember when we asked you whether you thought street performers in Mong Kok were entertaining or a nuisance? Well it seems more people find them a nuisance as Mong Kok’s district councilors will limit opening days of pedestrian precincts to weekends and public holidays only.

The move for restrictions came about when residents and shops nearby complained of the excessive noise pollution from street performers and activists.

Residents welcome the restriction who believe the decision is long overdue. The transport department will take about three to four months to update the signage in the road section currently closed to traffic from 4:00pm to 10:00pm Monday to Saturday and from noon to 10:00pm on Sunday and public holidays.

According to The Standard, street performers believe the restriction will be the beginning of the end of street art in Hong Kong, as when performers take their work to other pedestrian precincts they will too eventually be gone when residents complain.
