Ocean Park has launched an investigation after receiving a delivery man’s complaints that staff did not properly assist him when a door fell on him at the park.
The 23-year-old delivery man, surnamed Kwan, reportedly arrived at the Bayview Restaurant to delivery frozen meat at 10am last Thursday, but struggled with a heavy glass door when he went to leave and it fell on his leg, Ming Pao reports.
Restaurant and security staff apparently arrived when he shouted for help and gave him some ice to relieve the swelling on his leg, but Ocean Park’s first aid personnel said they could not treat his injuries as he was not a visitor or member of staff.
Kwan was reportedly told to make his own way to the nearest hospital or call an ambulance, but he was restricted from the park’s on site medical services. In a Facebook status, Kwan said that he filed a complaint with the park the next day after receiving a four-day sick leave for his injured muscles and swollen foot.
However, a customer service representative for Ocean Park told him on Saturday that the medical staff had given him their professional opinion, and that the park would not apologise or accept responsibility for the injury.
They abruptly changed their tune when Kwan’s exasperated Facebook status drew widespread sympathy and anger on his behalf from Hongkongers, as well as local media.
Later that evening, an Ocean Park spokesman said management was sorry to hear about the incident and would send a representative to discuss potential compensation, as well as a written apology.
