Occupy protesters will not be granted amnesty, says justice secretary

Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen declared yesterday that no protesters will be given special amnesty for their involvement in the Umbrella Movement.

He said this in response to a lawmaker who made the suggestion that Hong Kong avoid unnecessary disputes by granting special amnesty to those protesters who had no or little involvement in “critical circumstances” during the protests.

Rimsky rejected this idea, saying the Justice Department had considered it, and stated that each case will be prosecuted based on law, evidence and public interest.

Translation: the authorities are going to take their sweet, sweet time in processing the hundreds of protest-related arrests, one by one.
