While most booze-loving Hongkongers know and love a good Flaming Lambo, the drink’s association with blazing vehicles begins and ends with its name.
Last week, however, Hongkongers got a lesson in what a real life flaming automotive looks like when a dump truck sped through the Eastern Harbour Tunnel… on fire.
The truck’s fiery trail was captured on the dashcam of a nearby motorist, whose string of bleeped-out expletives we can totally relate to.
Apple Daily reports that the truck’s driver, a 51-year-old man surnamed Leung, was transporting wood and other construction and renovation waste from Wong Tai Sin to Chai Wan. Leung reportedly saw the billowing smoke in the truck’s rear view mirror when passing through the Eastern Harbour Tunnel, and pulled over 400 metres away from the Tunnel’s entrance in Quarry Bay.
The flames were put out by fire fighters within 12 minutes, and nobody was reported to have suffered any injuries, although the accident did cause traffic congestion after part of the lane was closed.
Speaking to Apple Daily, the President of the Hong Kong Environmental Protection Association said that waste from contruction and renovation always contains volatile and flammable liquids, such as paint thinner. He guessed that a cigarette may have been thrown into the truck, and suggested that the driver cover his future cargo with canvas as a pre-emptive measure.
