North Korean who defected in Hong Kong transferred to another country: South Korean media

The North Korean defector who took shelter in Hong Kong’s South Korean consulate has been safely transferred to another country, South Korean media reports.

A source told Yonhap Television News (YTN) that the defector has “safely arrived at a third country”.

How he left Hong Kong or which country he went to was not disclosed. YTN reports that the defector chose a country where he could continue his studies.

The North Korean, reported to be an 18-year-old maths prodigy, was in the city last month to compete in the 57th International Math Olympiad. He allegedly left the HKUST campus in Sai Kung on July 17 and took shelter in the South Korean consulate in Admiralty for roughly one month.

Lau Kwun-hang, the co-founder of the Hong Kong-based North Korean Defectors Concern Group, told the SCMP that it was likely the defector was applying for South Korean citizenship.
