A North Korean defector is being protected by Hong Kong police after seeking political asylum at the South Korean consulate, reports say.
Unnamed government sources told Apple Daily that police anti-terrorism squads and patrol officers have been stationed outside the consulate in Admiralty around the clock.
The defector is believed to have visited Hong Kong two weeks ago to attend an academic competition at a local university, SCMP reports.
According to Apple Daily, Central Government has been notified of the incident, and are scheduled to meet with the Security Bureau and police force to discuss the matter further.
Officials from the North and South Korean consulates were not available for comment when contacted by Reuters, and the Hong Kong government declined to comment when contacted by SCMP.
