No prison for driving student who killed pedestrian during lesson

A 25-year-old driving student, Lee, hit an elderly pedestrian early this year while 72-year-old driving teacher Kam was teaching him how to drive a light van.

A pedestrian rushed out onto the road just as Kam’s cell phone rang and as Lee was looking in the back mirror, he was unaware of the pedestrian in front of him.

Neither of them braked in time and the pedestrian was hit and seriously injured, and died a few days later. Although this would ordinarily be an offence for imprisonment, the judge took their guilty pleas and positive evaluation into consideration and let them off with 150 hours of social service and six months license suspension at the Tsuen Wan Court.
