Ferry services between Discovery Bay and Mui Wo will make its last run on Feb. 9.
The operator, Peng Chau Kaito, cites heavy losses and the Marine Department’s tougher safety measures after the 2012 Lamma ferry disaster that drowned 39 people for stopping their services.
According to the ferry service company, the government required ferries carrying 101 to 200 people to have three workers on board instead of two and “enough” life jackets for children, which the company is having difficulty compiling. Combined with their HK$1 million loss running the service, the company has decided to let their license run out next month rather than re-new it.
The 40 children who live in Mui Wo and goes to school in Discovery Bay will be hit the hardest, as it will take them three times as long to get to their school by bus.
