At a Legco panel meeting, the idea of completely banning live poultry imports and raising live chickens in Hong Kong was considered.
Health Secretary, Ko Wing-man, expressed the government is looking into hiring consultants to study if such extreme bans would help minimise the risks of avian flu outbreaks, reports the RTHK.
Lawmakers believe that local farms should be exempt from the ban so that some Hongkongers can still buy live chickens but Ko believes that there will still be risks with allowing local farms to raise chickens, as their chicks come from the mainland.
Across the border, the H7N9 bird flu continues to infect those in Shenzhen, Jiangsu and Zhejiang.
