The City University of Hong Kong (CityU) is set to open Hong Kong’s first-ever veterinary medicine school, but their plans have suffered a setback.
According to the RTHK, the University Grants Commission (UGC) have refused to provide funding to CityU. The UGC feels the university did not persuade them of the territory’s need for a school in this subject, the graduates prospects, qualifications and programme accreditation. The UGC also believes that there is already a huge supply of veterinarians in Hong Kong – it will be difficult for graduates of this course to find a job.
Even without funding, CityU said it will still establish a veterinary school for postgraduate students in the new semester and may consider admitting undergraduates in the near future.
The university will ensure there are enough funds to run the programme.
