No Confidence: Peers revolt against mainland-loving Law Society President in Hong Kong

A historic vote of no-confidence has been passed against the president of Hong Kong’s Law Society following his controversial support for China’s apparent efforts to control the territory’s judiciary.

At a closed-door meeting last night, around 800 lawyers, roughly 10 percent of the society’s membership, showed their anger at comments Ambrose Lam made about the recent white paper from China’s State Council that said judges would be required to love “the country”.

While this move was met with anger by many lawyers, who took to the streets in protest, Lam attempted to defend the document as “positive”, and even spoke of his admiration for China’s Communist Party during a radio interview.

The vote of non-confidence is however non-binding, and Lam has not yet indicated whether or not he will resign.
