Night-shift taxi driver, found unconscious by passerby, dies in hospital

A cab driver, was found unconscious in his taxi in Kwai Tsing after his overnight shift ended yesterday morning.

The 52-year-old, surnamed Liu, had just finished wiping his car down opposite South Kwai Chung Jockey Club Polyclinic at around 7.30am yesterday, Apple Daily reports.

Liu then sat down in the driver’s seat, where he was later found unconscious by a passerby who noticed he’d left the car door open.

Liu was rushed to the hospital, but could not be revived. The 52-year-old is survived by his wife and two sons, aged 21 and 17. Liu’s family said that he had high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and had been taking blood-thinning pills after undergoing artery-clearing surgery in 2014.

A member of the Hong Kong Medical Association said taxi companies should keep an eye on drivers known for suffering long-term illnesses, and try to allow them more rest periods instead of giving them overnight shifts. He also recommended that such drivers have frequent, regular check-ups to monitor their conditions, which would benefit the health and safety of both the drivers and their passengers.
