We can only hope that the still-unidentified owner of a silver Mercedes Benz a) saw this story unfold online over the weekend, and b) felt a bit of richly deserved embarrassment after their parking job ruined the start of 2018 for about 50 people.
According to on.cc, passengers siting on the H2S bus — a special service by New World First Bus that runs on New Year’s Eve from Central to Mong Kok — were stuck because the car was parked outside a parking lot near Star Ferry Pier in Central, blocking the bus’ route.
A spokesperson told the website that the bus was blocked for about half an hour before police showed up to gingerly guide it past the luxury car slash obstacle.
Video posted online, including this Facebook live one, shows the already restless passengers waiting inside the bus for the car’s owner to arrive.
Three minutes later, the passengers decide to get off the bus and surround the car. Several people spat on the car’s windows, a man pretended to kick its hood, and another threw a plastic bag at the car’s front window. (A plastic bag? Pretending to kick it? These people really need to work on their road rage skills.)
Finally, about eight men gathered at the back of the car and tried to push it away, with bystanders kept shouting “help them,” while others warned “that car has a dash cam! Are you crazy?”
Police arrived at the scene a few minutes later, prompting calls of “give it a ticket!” and “take it away!” from the crowd.
More officers arrived — armed with riot shields and batons — asking the angry onlookers to step back from the vehicles.
With the help of police, the bus driver managed to make its way through without scratching the car.
The mysterious owner of the Benz never turned up. On.cc reported that according to information provided by the Transport Department, the car was first registered in 2016, costs about HK$360,000 (or US$46,000), and is currently registered to a pharmaceutical company based in Sheung Shui.
