New mom ends stand-off with police after climbing onto 40th floor ledge with a baby

A new mom ended a four-hour stand-off with emergency services yesterday after she climbed onto the ledge of her 40th floor apartment cradling a 2-month-old baby boy.

Police, fire services, and personnel from the Social Welfare Department rushed the Tin Fu Court housing estate in Tin Shui Wai after receiving a police report at noon yesterday.

When they arrived, they saw a 27-year-old woman surnamed Lin standing on the ledge, threatening to jump.

At various points of the stand-off, Lin was seen pacing and at times sitting on the ledge.

An air cushion had also been brought to the scene, and the area was cordoned off.

According to Ming Pao, the stand off ended at about 4:40pm, four hours later, when was persuaded to go inside the apartment.

Both Lin and the baby were taken to hospital for a check up.

According to Apple Daily, Lin is a mainlander with a two-way permit. Her husband is a 31-year-old Hongkonger who was also in the apartment at the time of the incident.

The newspaper reports that Lin had been struggling as a new mom and suffering from post-partum depression. She had visited a doctor days before the incident.
