New era of pro-democracy activists ushered into LegCo in crucial election

Several young localist candidates have won seats in the hotly contested Legislative Council election.

An initial count today indicated that the pro-democracy camp would retain at least 24 seats, meaning it would maintain the power to block motions, bills and amendments to bills proposed by other lawmakers.

Student leader and co-founder of Demosisto Nathan Law, 23, has won a seat, making him the youngest legislator ever elected in Hong Kong.

Social activist Eddie Chu won a staggering 84,121 votes in New Territories West, securing the most votes out of all candidates in any constituency.

Also elected were Youngspiration’s Yau Wai-ching, 25, and Baggio Leung, 30, who support “self-determination” for Hong Kong.

However, the Labour Party suffered a hit as veteran lawmakers Lee Cheuk-yan and Cyd Ho were ousted from their seats in the New Territories West and Hong Kong Island constituencies, respectively.
