It’s depressing to see only one rating for Hong Kong air pollution index: “very high,” or, by WHO standards, way above maximum limit. Well, take a little comfort in Hong Kong’s new air quality health index to be released by the government.
Now, air pollution at four of the nine monitoring stations have changed from “high” to “moderate,” though environmentalists say that the new air quality health index (AQHI) is no less stringent than the old air pollution index (API).
The new index is based on calculating hospital admission and health risks brought about by air pollutants rather than pollution level. Still, the government has a long way to go in cleaning up our city’s air.
