NBA champions Mike Miller and Shaq launch new energy drink in Hong Kong

You may have heard that Shaq and Mike Miller were in town last week, tearing up the dance floor at Dragon-i and voicing strong opinions on other basketball players (and Bruce Lee).

But the two all-time NBA greats were also here for business – the energy drink business, to be exact. The two took part in a press conference promoting Miller’s new beverage brand: L.I.F.E.

Since winning the 2012-2013 NBA championships, Miller has shifted his efforts to becoming an energy drink entrepreneur. Apparently, it’s a natural career path.

The drink is to make its international debut in more than 1,000 retail stores across Hong Kong and Macau. The brand also hopes to expand to over 100,000 retail stores across China by the end of the year.

This part of the world is clearly lacking energy.

Billed as a sparkling beverage “specially formulated to suit the Asian palate” (because Asians all have the same taste, of course), L.I.F.E. is targeted at the city’s athletic youth, though 90 percent of it will most likely end up being consumed by overworked, cubicle-bound zombies.

We actually found the drink to be a bit too sweet and fruity for our “Asian palate”, but perhaps it might hit the spot more after an exhausting workout.

When asked why he decided to launch the drink in Hong Kong, Miller said it’s all about the kids.

“Hong Kong is such a great market to launch L.I.F.E. as it is a hugely vibrant and exciting city and place where youth culture plays an important role in influencing other markets across the Asian Pacific region,” Miller said.

Shaq added that he thinks the drink is innovative, just like Hong Kong and China. “It’s young and energetic, and China is a very popular place. I’ve been over here 25 times,” he said (boasting much?).

All common retail stores across the city will be selling L.I.F.E, so get one now at your nearest 7-Eleven… or Shaq will be after you!
