Namibian antelope coming to Hong Kong menus?

Hongkongers may soon be able chow down on antelope and hormone and disease-free beef from the most unlikeliest of sources: Namibia.

That’s right, if the southwest African country’s export application is approved, meat from Namibia will soon be shipped to Hong Kong for local consumption.

Namibian Minister of Trade and Industry Calle Schlettwein said that a group of Hong Kong officers will visit farms in Namibia soon to inspect conditions. He also expressed excitement at the more adventurous tastes of Hong Kong and China, compared to Europe where Namibia is already trading meat.

“In Hong Kong and [mainland] China, we have the possibility to trade with all parts of a cow including steak, fillet and low-end offal,” Schlettwein told the South China Morning Post. “We [Namibians] like offal very much. It’s a traditional cuisine.”

And perhaps Namibian antelope might interest diners here? “They [antelopes] are in abundance, very low in cholesterol and tasty. They are a strong competitor to beef,” said Schlettwein.

But before any Namibian meat makes it way to the shores of Hong Kong, it must pass the standards of the Imported Game, Meat and Poultry Regulations.
