Musicians protest at Hong Kong MTR station against luggage ‘double standard’

Dozens of musicians and protesters gathered on the Tai Wai MTR concourse on Saturday in protest against the “double standards” of the MTR’s luggage rules.

The protesting musicians organised their demonstration in response to MTR’s handling of music students with instruments on railway premises. In recent weeks, photos of students being turned away by MTR have been going viral, with netizens complaining that parallel traders are allowed to flout the rules on oversized lugguage.

Musicians wielded both traditional Chinese and Western instruments – including a set of bagpipes – and played in the concourse amid heavy staff and police presence. Some shouted the slogan “Instruments are not guilty, arts have their truth” amid the protest, according to Apple Daily.

Meanwhile, members of various localist groups were also on the scene, chanting anti-MTR slogans. A woman with luggage was filmed slapping a TVB reporter in the face while she was covering the events.
